Welcome to Wokingham, a Saxon town

Wokingham is a historic market town with origins dating back to Saxon times. The town's history, until recent times, was based largely on agriculture. Earlier industries, such as wool, silk and leather, depended on the sourcing of local raw materials - and a mulberry tree, from which silk worms fed, is still standing in the town today.

Wokingham is situated in Berkshire, around 40km west of central London and 10km east of Reading. The town is ideally situated for visits to London, Windsor and Oxford and is convenient for London's Heathrow airport.

Bearwood College

Bearwood College is located between Reading and Wokingham in the Royal County of Berkshire. It is just a 10-minute walk away from the rail station at Winnersh which provides fast and easy access to Reading and London by train.

The College was founded in 1827, in London, as a merchant seamens' orphanage with Royal Patronage. The College moved to its present site at Bearwood mansion in 1921.

This impressive Victorian mansion is the main College building and was the home of John Walter III who made his fortune from the Times newspaper. It is situated in 5,000 acres (2,000 hectares) of landscaped grounds with a beautiful lake.

Accommodation

Residential, with single and twin rooms and some small dormitories, in small borading houses located around the campus. Each house has a common room with television and small kitchen. There are ample toilet, shower and bath facilities and a weekly laundry facility.
