Welcome to York - a Roman city

Queen Ethelburga’s College was founded in 1912 and has succeeded in becoming one of Britain's finest and best-known girls' schools. In 1991 the School moved to its present location at Thorpe Underwood Hall, a splendid baronial hall located about 25 minutes' drive from York.
The school has been furnished and equipped to a very high standard and is more reminiscent of a country house hotel than a school. The campus covers more than 100 acres and includes an enclosed, walled 'secret' garden.

The Arsenal Soccer Schools programme will be running at York for Summer 2012. Find out more here, contact us on +44 1227 787730 or download our Arsenal Soccer Schools pdf.
York
York has been an important city since Roman times and its history is written in its streets. Four medieval gates lead in through walls, built on Roman foundations, which surround the old city. The River Ouse flows through the city, while narrow streets such as High and Low Petergate link crooked squares, and Georgian elegance predominates in Micklegate and St Saviourgate. Across the short, narrow Shambles, old timber-frame houses lean towards one another.
There are many old churches, but York is dominated by its magnificent Minster, which took two and a half centuries to build.
York is full of attractions from every age in its history: Roman remains; the Viking Centre; medieval halls; Georgian houses and the Railway Museum.

Students are accommodated in recently refurbished bedrooms, mostly with four or six beds in each room. Each room has an en-suite bathroom, television and telephone.
